The test is a manual, qualitative, immunochromatographic (lateral flow), self-test for the immunological detection of two liver function enzymes, alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in a finger prick whole blood sample. The test is for use at home by members of the public for checking the physiological status of the liver. General information Liver disease is almost entirely preventable, with the main risk factors being alcohol consumption, obesity, and hepatitis. The liver is the body's second-largest organ and plays a vital role in maintaining good health, by: Removing toxins, such as drugs and alcohol from the body Producing bile which helps with the digestion of fats Helping to fight infections Controlling cholesterol levels Liver disease typically does not cause noticeable symptoms until it has progressed significantly and the liver has sustained damage. At this stage, symptoms may include loss of appetite, weight loss, and jaundice. Speak with your doctor if you have any symptoms of liver disease, or are concerned about your health. Some of the most common blood tests for liver function include the transaminase enzymes aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), which are released by the liver when it is damaged. Although ALT is found mainly in the liver, AST is less specific, as it can also be present in heart muscle and other tissues. Time to result The test gives a result in 10 minutes at home. Warnings A test for biomarkers, such as ALT or AST is not a diagnosis. A negative result cannot rule-out liver disease. Not following the instructions exactly as written in the instructions for use may cause a false positive or false negative result. Do not change your medication, diet or lifestyle solely on the basis of a self-test - always discuss your result with an appropriate healthcare professional first. Accuracy This test has a cut-off of 80 IU/L of ALT/AST for a positive result and is calibrated to the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) international reference method. The test has an overall agreement of 95.83% (89.19 to 99.04)*, sensitivity of 98.36%, and specificity of 91.43% with laboratory tests for ALT/AST. Although this test is reliable for the detection of these liver enzymes, all medical tests can give false positive or false negative results.
