Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Folatières” 2022 100% Chardonnay Region: Côte de Beaune, Burgundy ESTATE HISTORY This Clos has been a Chartron family Monopole since 1917. Domaine Jean Chartron has a long historical background, having been established in 1859. It has a unique portfolio of vineyards that includes three famous clos: Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Pucelle, Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Caillerets, and Chevalier-Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers. TERROIR Folatières is Puligny’s largest Premier Cru, defined by shallow, stony limestone soils on a steep mid-slope. This site produces a Chardonnay that balances the richness of a Grand Cru with a distinct mineral tension. The 2022 vintage is particularly expressive, offering ripe stone fruit and a flinty, structured finish due to the warm growing season. VITICULTURE Jean Chartron practices sustainable viticulture, focusing on soil health and low yields to reflect the Folatières terroir. The vines are tended to ensure deep root penetration into the limestone, which helps maintain acidity even in warm years like 2022. Harvesting is done by hand to select only the highest quality berries, preserving the aromatic precision and structural balance essential for aging. WINEMAKING Jean Chartron employs traditional Burgundian methods, utilizing gentle pneumatic pressing and alcoholic fermentation in oak barrels. The 2022 was aged for twelve months in French oak, with about twenty-five percent new wood, followed by four months in stainless steel to refine its structure. This process integrates subtle spice and texture while preserving the wine's limestone-driven clarity and energy. TASTING AND FOOD PAIRINGS The 2022 vintage offers a striking bouquet of orange blossom, white peach, and acacia, underscored by a flinty, smoky minerality. On the palate, it is energized and brightly structured, showing ripe citrus and yellow plum fruit with a slightly waxy, substantial texture and a grippy, persistent finish. For food pairings, this wine excels with rich seafood such as roasted brill, salmon, or tuna. It also complements shellfish served with concentrated juices, pasta in creamy sauces, or poultry seasoned with black garlic and wild herbs. Its depth and mineral tension make it a versatile partner for cured meats and refined vegetable dishes like roasted nectarines with soft cheeses.
