Lion's Head — Georgian Bay, Bruce Peninsula Two days rebuilding your Level 1 skills to a higher standard. Refine your stroke efficiency and boat control with expert coaching — not just enough to pass, enough to paddle well. Most L1 courses teach you enough to be safe. This clinic takes those same skills and makes them efficient. Lion's Head harbour gives you sheltered water to drill in, and the escarpment coastline gives you a reason to get it right. You'll leave paddling with less effort, more control, and a foundation that actually supports what comes next. 2 daysDuration 1:4Ratio Lion's HeadLocation ShelteredExposure What You'll Work On Every skill here is one you've already been taught. The difference is precision, efficiency, and coaching that won't let you settle for "good enough." Forward Stroke The stroke you use 95% of the time and the one most paddlers never refine past their first weekend. Torso rotation, catch timing, blade path, and exit — rebuilt from the ground up. Torso rotation and power transfer — using your core, not your arms Catch, power phase, and exit — timing and blade angle Tracking without correction strokes — hull speed from efficiency, not effort Cadence and rhythm for sustained paddling Boat Control & Maneuvering Edging, sweep strokes, rudder strokes, and turning under momentum. The skills that separate a paddler who can go straight from one who can go anywhere. Edging — controlled lean without bracing, using it to steer Sweep strokes — full arc, partial arc, linked with edging Bow rudder and cross-bow rudder — turning under momentum Draw strokes and sculling — lateral movement and positioning Bracing & Stability Braces are reflexes, not techniques you remember. Two days gives you enough repetition to start building that reflex properly. Low brace — timing, blade angle, hip snap High brace — when you need it, how to protect your shoulder Sculling for support — continuous stability in unstable water Integrating bracing with edging and turning Rescues You learned rescues in your L1. Now make them fast, smooth, and reliable — the standard that actually matters when someone's in the water. T-rescue — positioning, speed, and communication Paddle float self-rescue — the version that works, not just the version you passed with Bow rescue — fast re-entry when a partner is close Wet exit confidence — calm, controlled, every time Both Days Include Two full days of coaching at 1:4 ratio Published curriculum — consistent quality regardless of instructor Lion's Head harbour for sheltered drills, escarpment coastline for context Kayak Ontario learning platform access — stroke technique, boat control, and rescue modules Available to Add Valley sea kayak + Nookie gear rental — no boat ownership required Prerequisite: Paddle Canada or ORCKA Level 1 (or equivalent). This clinic is for paddlers who have the basics and want to make them better — not for complete beginners. Not sure? Get in touch. Where this goes next: Skill Builder half-day clinics at Guelph Lake to isolate specific skills. Navigator and Explorer weekends for coastal navigation. Surf & Dynamic Conditions at Tobermory for rougher water. Your foundation supports all of it. Questions Do I need my own kayak? No. Valley sea kayak and Nookie gear rentals are available. How is this different from just retaking my L1? An L1 course teaches you to pass. This clinic teaches you to paddle well. The skills overlap — the standard doesn't. Two full days at 1:4 with expert coaching is a completely different experience than a certification course trying to cover everything in a weekend. I already paddle regularly — is this too basic? Time on the water isn't the same as coached refinement. Most experienced paddlers have ingrained habits that cost them efficiency. If you've never had your forward stroke rebuilt by a coach at 1:4, this will change how you paddle. Is this the same as the Skill Builder clinics? Skill Builders are half-day clinics that isolate one skill area each. Foundation Reset covers everything across a full weekend — it's the comprehensive rebuild. Many paddlers do Foundation Reset first, then use Skill Builders to go deeper on specific areas. Will we paddle the coastline? Lion's Head harbour provides sheltered water for drills and repetition. Depending on conditions and group ability, we may work along the escarpment coastline — but the focus is on building quality, not chasing exposure. Can this clear L2 conditions? Foundation Reset focuses on L1 skill quality, not L2 certification. That said, the skills refined here are directly relevant to L2 readiness. Contact us to discuss your certification pathway. We acknowledge that the land on which we gather (known as Lion's Head) is the traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki, Saugeen Ojibway, and Mississauga. We are grateful for the knowledge shared with us by the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as Canada and the circumpolar region of the Northern Hemisphere.
