Gasteropelecus maculatus (Spotted Hatchetfish)
Gasteropelecus maculatus – Spotted Hatchetfish The Spotted Hatchetfish is a unique and fascinating surface-dwelling fish from South America, admired for its unusual hatchet-shaped body and beautiful spotted pattern. Their streamlined body and strong pectoral muscles allow them to move gracefully near the water surface, creating a stunning natural display in a planted aquarium. These peaceful schooling fish feel safest and display their best behaviour when kept in groups. They spend most of their time in the upper levels of the aquarium, making them an excellent choice for adding movement and activity to the surface area of a planted tank. Spotted Hatchetfish appreciate floating plants and shaded areas, which help recreate their natural environment of slow-moving forest streams. As excellent jumpers, a secure aquarium lid is essential. They are peaceful community fish and can be kept with other calm species that will not compete aggressively for food.
