Metal Gear Solid, a video game directed by Hideo Kojima, is a stealth action game that was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and was first released by Konami in 1998 for the PlayStation. It is regarded as one of the most significant and greatest games of all time, credited with popularizing the stealth genre. As the third canonical title in the Metal Gear series, it is a direct sequel to Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. REX, the ultimate Metal Gear, was capable of delivering a nuclear weapon both to and from any point on the globe, using undetectable and untraceable technology. Unlike its predecessors, REX used a rail gun that fired smaller projectiles without chemical propellants, making it almost invisible to radar. This undermined the mutually assured destruction principle by enabling whoever controlled it to launch a nuclear attack at any time without warning. Additionally, its missiles could destroy underground bunkers, a lesson learned from the Gulf War.
