17 EL BANDOLÓN (The Mandolin) by artist Mark Cantrell of WoodcreaturesNM
El Bandolón is carved from wild collected Alligator Juniper with Mahogany tuning pegs. The mahogany is scrap wood left over from a local guitar builder. It is finished with a tung oil blend, followed with 3 layers of polyurethane. Dimensions = 22" x 9.5" x 2", ready to hang. Also shown here is the original Don Clemente Gallo card for EL BANDOLON. Riddle associated with this image: Tocando su bandolón, está el mariachi Simón. *** Mark lives and creates in Silver City, New Mexico. He carves and makes creatures that come from the scattered myths, ancient stories, and dark corners of our collective minds. Mark forages for wood on dog walks and hikes into the outdoors where I lives and where he travels. The wood that becomes a creature is Mark's earnest attempt to glorify all that experience of the parent plant, while exalting the spirit that dwells within each piece.
