Rather than focusing only on top lots, they aim to deepen and broaden these relationships. They present coffee as the product of people, not just sensory attributes, and work closely with partners to understand what they need to succeed—whether that’s meeting requested prices or investing in the physical and intellectual infrastructure needed to thrive. Santos Saturnino Lima is a third-generation coffee farmer, husband, and father of three who began cultivating coffee at 16 after receiving land from his father. He hopes to pass his knowledge and passion on to his children, despite facing challenges like high production costs and labor shortages. Over the years, he has built a home and expanded his farm, with plans to further improve and grow his production while maintaining quality. He is inspired by peers to focus on coffee processing for export. Grateful for international support, he remains committed to his work, his community, and securing a better future for his family. Santos is actively involved in peaceful resistance against mining in Xinca territory. This year marks 13 years since the Xinka people rejected the Canadian-owned Escobal mine in a plebiscite held without their consent on Indigenous land. Despite ongoing risks and sacrifices, the community has continued its efforts and recently achieved a historic milestone by completing a consultation process under the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The results of this process which investigated the cultural, religious and environmental impact of the mine’s development, show in the Xinka’s favour and the community now awaits the decision of the Guatemala Constitutional Court. Read more It's been a while since we've had a Guatemalan coffee in our portfolio and when we heard the story of the Xinka resilience group we immediately thought “we have to buy their coffee!” We then tasted the samples from Semilla and they were very reassuring. This coffee is a versatile and easy drinking omni roast. The smooth, nutty body reminds us of peanut butter and honey with a date-like dried fruit sweetness.
