From Coop to Kitchen: A Hands-On Chicken Processing Class

Sunday May 17 2026 from 10:30am-12pm 5610 4th Ave N, St. Petersburg Fl Few skills connect you to your food more directly than processing a chicken from start to finish. In this hands-on class, you'll learn the full workflow that's been part of small farms and homesteads for generations: humane dispatch, scalding and plucking, evisceration. Please know going in: this is real, not theoretical. You'll be working with live birds at the start of class and finished chickens at the end. We treat the animals with care and respect throughout, and we'll walk you through each step and offer the opportunity to do it yourself if you choose. If you'd rather observe a portion before participating, that's completely fine — but this class isn't a demonstration, it's a workshop, and you should expect to be elbow-deep in the process. No prior experience needed — just closed-toe shoes, clothes you don't mind getting messy, and a willingness to learn. We are offering this course on a sliding price scale so that everyone is able to access this resource regardless of their financial situation. The sliding scale represents the idea that monetary resources like income should not be the only determining factor in whether or not someone can access services/classes/etc. Take a look at the green bottles image in the product images to help determine where you fall on the sliding scale (image created & shared freely by Alexis J. Cunningfolk). $20 is the actual cost of the class. If you choose a price below the top tier you are receiving a discount. $25 is the Pay-It-Forward price. The extra money goes towards supporting scholarships as well as future free and low-cost classes. Essentially it's an opportunity to not only purchase the class but also support your fellow community members while you're at it. $10 is the sacrifice price. It is for those who are able to meet their basic needs but have little-to-no expendable income. Paying for this class may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create hardship.
