Introduced in 1962 as the standard Bundeswehr service belt buckle, this design carries the Bundesadler, the German Federal Eagle officially readopted in 1950 by President Theodor Heuss as a conscious return to the democratic values of the Weimar Republic. Surrounding the eagle are the words "Einigkeit · Recht · Freiheit" — Unity, Justice, Freedom — taken from the third stanza of the Deutschlandlied written by Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841 and Germany's enduring national motto.
