Rolex Explorer II 1655 Mk1 Straight Hand
The Rolex Explorer II Reference 1655 is widely regarded as one of the coolest — and perhaps still somewhat underrated — vintage Rolex sports watches available on today’s market. Originally developed for cave explorers and speleologists working in environments without natural daylight, the fixed 24-hour bezel and large orange 24-hour hand allowed the wearer to clearly distinguish between day and night at a glance. This particular example is an early execution featuring the desirable straight seconds hand, without the later “lollipop” bubble detail. The watch retains its original Mk1 dial in excellent overall condition. Among collectors, the reference 1655 is affectionately known in Italy as “Il Freccione” — meaning “the big arrow” — in reference to its oversized orange 24-hour hand. On this example, the hand has been professionally stabilised and retains a wonderfully vibrant orange tone, creating a beautiful contrast against the rich black dial. The tritium lume on both the hour markers and hands has aged evenly to a soft mellow colour, adding further warmth and character to the watch. The case and fixed bezel remain in very strong condition throughout, preserving the bold and purposeful appearance that defines the reference. The watch is fitted with a folded-link Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 7836, complete with reference 258 end links and a clasp stamped “4 71.” The watch has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker and is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come. A beautifully preserved “Freccione” with all the right details collectors love to see !
