Ce petit cahier n’est pas un ouvrage historique sur la flore méditerranéenne, ni un livre généraliste sur les végétaux et les minéraux dont on peut extraire des couleurs. Ni même un manuel technique enseignant l’art de la teinture ou des peintures naturelles. Mais un minuscule condensé de tout cela, rassemblant quelques notes, recettes, découvertes, que nous avons glanées depuis plusieurs mois, à l'occasion de résidences de recherche, de rencontres et d'ateliers menés à Marseille et à Tanger, en Provence et au Maroc. Au travers d'une sélection de plantes tinctoriales, cet écho* se lit donc comme une modeste introduction aux couleurs naturelles communes aux deux rives de la Méditerranée, à la mémoire collective et populaire qu’elles convoquent, et aux savoir-faire qui leur sont associés. Mais aussi comme un petit manifeste pour l'usage des matériaux naturels dans les arts graphiques et l'impression. * Couleurs communes, de Tanger à Marseille est le premier opus de la collection échos. Nor is it a technical manual teaching the art of dyeing or natural paints. Rather, it is a tiny condensation of all these things, bringing together a few notes, recipes and discoveries that we have gathered over the past several months, during research residencies, encounters and workshops held in Marseille and Tangier, in Provence and Morocco. Through a selection of dye plants, this echo can therefore be read as a modest introduction to the natural colours shared by the two shores of the Mediterranean, to the collective and popular memory they evoke, and to the know-how associated with them. But also as a small manifesto for the use of natural materials in graphic arts and printing. * Couleurs communes, de Tanger à Marseille is the first opus in the échos collection.
