Despite its crocodile-like appearance, Sarcosuchus belonged to the extinct family Pholidosauridae, making it only distantly related to modern crocodilians. Research by Paul Sereno and colleagues has revealed many unique features that distinguish these giant reptiles from their modern relatives. During the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 115 to 105 million years ago, Sarcosuchus imperator ruled the rivers and wetlands of the Elrhaz Formation, becoming one of the largest aquatic predators of its time. For this artwork, we recreated a massive 10.5-meter-long Sarcosuchus imperator, portraying it as an apex predator powerful enough to compete with Suchomimus tenerensis within the same ecosystem. This model captures the impressive scale and prehistoric dominance of one of the most legendary giant reptiles in Earth’s history.
