Joseon Dynasty White porcelain Bottle with Iron-painted Tiger and Magpie Design

An iron-painted jar fired during the Joseon Dynasty. It features the "yuhuchun" (pear-shaped) form, characterized by a bulbous lower body, a slender neck, and a flared, trumpet-like mouth. The design painted on the body using iron pigment depicting motifs such as a tiger with a magpie or a tiger with a pine tree is considered auspicious, symbolizing good tidings, the warding off of evil, and the attraction of good fortune. The composition features an endearing tiger standing upon a rock surrounded by blooming flowers, with a pine tree and two perched magpies depicted above. White slip is applied in a mottled fashion over a grey clay body, followed by a slightly yellowish transparent glaze. This combination of white slip and glaze creates a distinctive mottled appearance of grey and yellow hues that harmonizes beautifully with the tiger motif. The glaze exhibits fine crackle-glaze patterns. It has a ring-shaped foot with a narrow, unglazed foot rim, while the interior of the foot itself is coated with a thin layer of transparent glaze. The black dots visible on the rim are areas where the glaze has pulled back; there are no actual chips or scratches. The mark near the foot that resembles a crack is actually dried white slip and does not penetrate the body of the vessel.It is in good condition with a moist luster overall.
