Meet Your Instructor: Rikard Palmquist Based in Gustavsberg outside Stockholm, Rikard Palmquist is a dedicated functional ceramicist and guest member at Blås & Knåda. Renowned for crafting exquisite ceramics for fine dining restaurants and bespoke tea ritual vessels- such as Japanese and Chinese chawans, katakuchi, and teapots; Rikard brings deep craftsmanship and warmth to his teaching. Rikard crafts his own glazes using clay, granite, and wood ash gathered from local nature. His design philosophy centers on creating pieces that evoke a sense of continuous evolution inviting you to discover something subtle and new each time you hold them. What is "Throwing Off a Hump" & Why Do It? Throwing off a hump (or "throwing off the mound") is an efficient and fluid pottery technique where a large mass of clay is centered on the wheel at once. Instead of centering individual small lumps of clay every time, you shape multiple small-to-medium vessels: like tea cups, bowls, or espresso mugs one after another straight from the top section of the mound. Why potters love it: Efficiency & Rhythm: It saves setup time and creates an intuitive, continuous throwing rhythm. Flow State: It helps you relax into the clay and build muscle memory quickly. Consistency: Excellent for practicing control, speed, and subtle variations in form.
