BG large calyx cup

Black-glaze calyx cup decorated with a white-painted nymph surrounded by vine leaves, inspired by Gnathia pottery of the 4th century BCE. The figure floats freely against the deep black surface, creating a striking visual contrast. The white areas are applied before firing, with details rendered in diluted clay-based paint or ochres, while additional colours—such as pink—are organic or diluted mineral pigments applied after firing. The decoration reflects the layered technical processes and refined aesthetic of late Classical South Italian workshops. The images show different vase productions over the years.
