Why this set is good for Japanese learners Every kanji has furigana (the small hiragana printed alongside). Jujutsu Kaisen ran in Weekly Shonen Jump, written for Japanese elementary and middle school readers, so readings are printed on essentially every kanji. If you can read hiragana, nothing on the page is locked away from you. What makes this series particularly useful is the contemporary teenage Japanese. The characters are high schoolers in present-day Tokyo, and they talk like it: casual forms, slang, sarcasm, and the kind of blunt, clipped speech that rarely makes it into a textbook. Notice the register too. This is three students talking over each other in plain casual speech, right down to a stray Kansai nandeyanen — the kind of Japanese a textbook will never hand you. Be aware of the flip side of a supernatural setting: the series invents a lot of specialized vocabulary. 呪術 (jujutsu, cursed techniques), 呪霊 (cursed spirits), 領域展開 (domain expansion), and so on. It is consistent and you learn it quickly, but the first volume or two ask more of you than a slice-of-life series would. The story Itadori Yūji (虎杖悠仁) is an ordinary high schooler with extraordinary physical strength. When his school's occult club unseals a cursed object, he swallows it to protect his friends, and finds himself sharing his body with Ryōmen Sukuna (両面宿儺), the King of Curses.
