The larger portrait depicts a younger woman seated formally before the camera, wearing a dark dress with a contrasting white collar and small neck ornament. Her centrally parted hair is arranged smoothly to either side of the face in a style characteristic of the 1850s and early 1860s. The portrait is housed beneath an oval gilt-brass mat within a larger fitted case lined with faded rose-colored velvet. The smaller portrait depicts an apparently older woman wearing a horizontally striped dress with a broad white collar, earrings, and a decorative brooch at the neckline. Her hair is similarly center-parted and arranged close to the head. The photograph is presented within a smaller gilt-brass oval mat and a fitted case with a rose-toned velvet interior. Both exterior cases are themselves decorative period objects. The smaller case is especially attractive, with an embossed geometric and foliate design retaining traces of gilt decoration. The larger case features a deeply embossed scrolling design surrounding a central cartouche. Each retains its small metal closure hardware.
