City Racing: The Life and Times of an Artist-Run Gallery, 1988–1998
Published in 2002 by Black Dog Publishing, City Racing chronicles a decade in the life of a pioneering artist-run space established in a former betting shop near the Oval cricket ground in Kennington, South London. Founded in 1988 by five artists — Matt Hale, Paul Noble, John Burgess, Keith Coventry, and Pete Owen — City Racing became a vital meeting point for a generation of British artists working outside the establishment. Told through collective histories, personal recollections, and visual documentation, the book features work by and portraits of artists including Sarah Lucas, Matt Collishaw, Gillian Wearing, Fiona Banner, and Adam Chodzko, among many others.
