This is a 27 Inch Hand-Hammered Nepali Temple Gong One of a Kind Nepali temple gongs are hand-hammered in the Kathmandu Valley by bronze craftsmen specialists. This one is 27 inches across, hammered from a bronze in the bell-metal family, patinated dark, and finished with a full iconography that is unique to this one gong. The Om symbol sits at the center of this instrument, inside a radiating mandala of lotus petals. Two full lotus blooms rise from the base of the mandala. A scattered star field fills the dark ground around the mandala. This is cosmic rather than purely devotional. The tone here is an F#4 carried on a deep A1 nearly three octaves beneath it, with a strong mid-register cluster around G#3 and G#4 that fills the middle of the spectrum. Played with a soft mallet it builds slowly and opens to a long decay, with shimmer that comes from close partial pairs beating against each other roughly every second or two. The character is bright in the voice and deep in the bass, with the dominant F#4 opening above an A1 undertone that keeps the instrument grounded. Playing will favor a rolled crescendo and it rewards a single clean strike. It sounds like a different instrument depending on how you choose to play it.
