The scene focuses on Whitehall and Scotland Yard, at the heart of Westminster and close to the principal institutions of British government and royal administration. Vertue’s meticulous approach captures the architectural character of the district during the Georgian period, before many of its historic buildings were altered, rebuilt, or replaced. Whitehall had long been associated with the English monarchy and government. The former Palace of Whitehall had served as the principal royal residence until the devastating fire of 1698, after which the surviving buildings were incorporated into a growing governmental complex. By the eighteenth century, Whitehall had become increasingly identified with the administration of the British state, containing important government offices and residences. Nearby Scotland Yard was historically connected with the administration of the royal household. Its name derived from the former location of the Scottish royal representatives and court, and the area subsequently became associated with government and policing.
