He is shown holding: The Holy Cross — the ultimate sign of Christ's victory over sin, death, and evil. The Rule of Saint Benedict — representing wisdom, prayer, discipline, and a life ordered toward God. On one side appears a chalice, recalling the attempted poisoning of Saint Benedict. Through making the Sign of the Cross, the poisoned cup shattered before he could drink it. On the opposite side is a raven carrying away poisoned bread, another miraculous event in which God protected the saint from those seeking to harm him. Surrounding Saint Benedict is the Latin inscription: EIUS IN OBITU NOSTRO PRAESENTIA MUNIAMUR "May we be strengthened by his presence at the hour of our death." At the bottom appears: EX S M CASINO MDCCCCLXXX This commemorates the Jubilee Medal officially approved at Monte Cassino Abbey in 1880, from which the modern Saint Benedict Medal originates.
