NGOIA POLLARD NAPALTJARRI TITLE: SWAMPS AT NYRRIPI ACRYLIC ON LINEN 96CM X 88CM NGOIA HAS SIGNED THE PAINTING AND A PHOTO WILL BE PROVIDED. REF#NPN492 Born: c1940-2022. Haasts Bluff Also known as: Ngnoia Language: Walpiri Skin Name: Napaltjarri Dreamings: Water Snake, Swamps at Nyrripi Ngoia grew up in Hassts Bluff, 227 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Her parents Angoona Nangala and Jim Tungurrayi moved to Papunya where she attended school in the 1960s. It was here in Papunya where she married Jack Tjampitjinpa Pollard and had five children. He was an important Papunya Tula artist and initially Ngoia would assist her husband with his painting. They later moved to Kintore then to Mount Liebig. Sadly, Jack passed away in the late 1980s leaving Ngoia to paint independently. Ngoia paints her father’s country which is sacred Warlpiri land. Her paintings tell the stories of the wet and dry seasons such as the swamps and lakes (shown as ovals in her paintings) near Nyrripi (Talarada) Northwest of Mt. Liebig. The dots represent the water drying up and the cracks in the ground forming. The Water snake is one of her ancestors dreaming. This snake is believed to be just beneath the surface. Ngoia is a Senior Custodian and has special responsibilities towards her land and passing down of information. Ngoia’s work can been seen in galleries nationally and internationally. In 2006 she won the prestigious NATSIAA 23rd Telstra Award for painting. This painting was purchased directly from Ngoia, and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
