Originally from California, Thomas Barter is a New Zealand glass artist whose diverse artistic career spans ceramics, public art and cast glass. After studying ceramics, Thomas spent more than two decades creating handmade tiles and large-scale public artworks throughout California before relocating to New Zealand in 2004. Now based in Auckland, Thomas draws on his extensive experience in mould-making and ceramic processes to create distinctive cast glass sculptures. His practice explores the delicate relationship between paper and glass, transforming origami-inspired forms into luminous, enduring artworks. Capturing the lightness and movement of folded paper, Thomas’ glass sculptures reveal the beauty of craftsmanship, material and light.
