Anthropomorphic Leather and Iron Magazine Rack
Gorgeous anthropomorphic magazine rack by French modernist Jacques Adnet, made in the 1950s. The frame is black enameled iron bent into flowing loops. A tall swan-neck handle rises from the base, and a smaller hook curls up from the opposite end, so the piece reads almost like a bird or animal in motion. Both curves are wrapped in a grey leather with Adnet’s signature saddle stitching in contrast thread. That hand-stitched leather detail is the hallmark of his best-known work. Two looped iron compartments hold magazines, books or records. The rack stands on splayed, crossed legs that give it a light, almost architectural stance. It works just as well as a sculptural object on its own as it does as functional storage. Super cool piece. Located at our Los Angeles gallery.
