Fool in the Rain Process Monsoon Varietal Kent, Typica, S795 Region Southern India, State of Kerala Altitude 1200 masl Aroma Toasted Sesame, Honey Roast Viennese Body Rich Acidity Low A Bit About Fool in the Rain This coffee is a classic example of Monsooned Malabar, a unique processing method developed along India's southwestern Malabar Coast. Historically, coffee transported by sea to Europe was exposed to humid monsoon conditions during long voyages, which caused the beans to absorb moisture and undergo significant physical and chemical changes. Today, this effect is intentionally recreated by exposing dried coffee to warm, humid monsoon winds in ventilated warehouses. The beans are conditioned for several weeks, absorbing moisture and swelling as their acidity mellows and their flavour profile develops. Unlike washed coffees, the process doesn't rely on fermentation or water to remove mucilage. Instead, the transformation comes from controlled exposure to the humid monsoon environment, giving Monsooned Malabar its characteristic mellow acidity, heavy body and earthy, distinctive flavour. The coffee is sourced through Allana, an Indian exporter with roots dating back to 1865. The company established its coffee division in Bangalore in 1982 and later developed dedicated curing and monsooning facilities, including infrastructure along the Malabar Coast. Roaster's Notes Fool in the Rain is a rich and distinctive Indian coffee with very low acidity and a deep, mellow character. Notes of toasted sesame and honey give the cup a savory sweetness, while the monsooned process creates a full, rounded profile with a distinctly earthy character. This is a coffee for those looking for something completely different from the bright, fruit-forward coffees we typically feature. Barista's Notes Fool in the Rain is particularly well suited to espresso and milk-based drinks. Its low acidity and rich body make for a smooth, easy-drinking shot, while the toasted sesame and honey notes add an interesting layer of complexity. It also works beautifully in a French press or other full-immersion brewer, where the heavier body and mellow character can really shine.
