Daniel Roth’s watches are usually associated with traditional haute horlogerie: precious metals, guilloché dials, complicated movements, and that unmistakable double-ellipse case. The Le Sentier asks a much more unusual question: what happens when you turn the Daniel Roth aesthetic into a sporty, everyday watch? The answer is wonderfully strange. Roth established his eponymous manufacture in 1989 after playing a pivotal role in the revival of Breguet, helping establish the visual language that would define the historic marque for decades. As one of the earliest figures in the modern independent watchmaking movement, he subsequently developed an equally recognizable identity of his own, centered on distinctive case shapes, elaborate dial work, and traditional complications. This stainless steel Le Sentier takes those signatures in a considerably more casual direction. The familiar double-ellipse, or ellipsocurvex, case remains, framing an intricately finished silver dial with multiple textures. Vertical guilloché occupies the center and outer sections, while a brushed chapter ring carries elongated black Roman numerals. Blued-steel hands provide a sharp graphic contrast, and a neatly integrated date aperture at 6 o’clock adds a useful everyday complication without upsetting the symmetry. But the bracelet is what makes this watch! Rather than simply attaching a conventional steel bracelet, Daniel Roth extended the case geometry directly onto the wrist. Each link is covered with raised, rounded rectangular elements that echo the shape of the watch itself. Collectors have understandably nicknamed it the “Lego” bracelet, and the description fits: playful, tactile, slightly eccentric, and completely unlike the bracelets normally associated with traditional Swiss watchmaking. That makes Le Sentier particularly interesting within Daniel Roth's story. The temptation when creating a sports watch is usually to simplify the design and make everything more utilitarian. Roth did essentially the opposite, expanding his already distinctive design vocabulary into the bracelet and making the entire watch more expressive in the process. It’s Daniel Roth without the formality: guilloché, blued hands, Roman numerals, an eccentric case, and one of the most delightfully odd integrated bracelets around. A serious watch that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This watch is fabulous.
