SPOTTED CONGO PUFFER (TETRAODON SCHOUTEDENI) CARE The Spotted Congo or Leopard Puffer originates from Pool Malebo (previously called Stanley Pool), a lake-like expansion situated in the lower Congo River system within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In this environment, you’ll find it thriving in rocky areas with fast-moving, oxygen-rich waters, where it spends its time tucked away in rock crevices or among riparian plants, waiting patiently to pounce on unsuspecting small fish or crustaceans that swim by. To keep the Spotted Congo Puffer happy, you’ll want a spacious, well-established aquarium featuring a soft, sandy bottom and plenty of hiding spots like caves and crevices. Since these fish eat enthusiastically and produce quite a bit of waste, investing in reliable filtration is essential (an external canister filter works wonderfully). The tank should include zones with gentle to moderate water flow and excellent oxygenation—you can achieve this using a powerhead with a flow diverter angled toward the water’s surface, or by maintaining a slightly lower water level so that filtered water cascades down onto the surface. This is the tiniest African pufferfish species and is highly prized by enthusiasts who love unusual fish. Unfortunately, imports from this area have become quite unpredictable because of political instability and health concerns, making wild-caught specimens incredibly hard to find in the aquarium hobby today—even though they were much more commonly kept back in the mid-1900s. As a result, there are only a few documented cases of this fish thriving in home aquariums recently. While most sources indicate that this particular pufferfish tends to be fairly peaceful with its own kind and other species, it’s wise to stay cautious and keep a way to separate tank mates if needed—especially after breeding. Providing plenty of hiding spots and visual breaks in your tank gives you the best shot at successfully keeping a group (add them all at once and watch them closely), and any potential companions should have short fins and be quick swimmers. Rocks, driftwood, and tough plants that handle water movement work great for decorating a tank for these puffers. Like all puffer species, this fish can puff up when scared or trapped. Never encourage this behavior, and definitely never let it happen above water where it might gulp air—that can be deadly. When moving a Spotted Congo Puffer to a bigger tank, gently guide the fish into a solid container underwater rather than using a net and lifting it out of the water. Spotted Congo Puffers can shift their colors based on their surroundings or how they’re feeling. Since they’re a scaleless species, keep in mind these fish might react badly to certain medications. One more thing to remember: pufferfish personalities can differ, and some individuals might not follow the typical behavior pattern for their species—even ones considered ‘safe’ with others. It’s always smart to have a tank divider or even a backup aquarium ready just in case you need it. Spotted Congo Puffers really don’t tolerate murky or poor water conditions. Feeding Your aquatic friends will thrive on a tasty variety of meaty frozen options like Mysis shrimp, vitamin-packed brineshrimp, bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, earthworms, chopped cockle and mussel meat, chopped shell-on prawns, small snails, and partially opened cockle-in-shell. It’s really important to regularly offer hard-shelled foods to help maintain a healthy beak. Many aquarists find it super convenient to breed small aquatic snails in a separate nano aquarium, where they multiply quickly and become a readily available food source. Here’s a helpful tip: you can gut-load snails and live shrimp with dry food before feeding to boost their nutritional benefits. Just remember to be mindful about how much cockle and mussel you offer, since overfeeding them can lead to thiaminase-related concerns.
