Cyanotype Workshop | December 8, 2026
Sun, chemistry, and a little bit of magic. Join us for a hands-on cyanotype workshop led by Vanessa Mercedes Figueroa of Sun Spot Studios, a Vancouver-based artist and educator who's spent the past two years teaching and exploring this historic photographic process. Cyanotype dates back to 1842, prized for its deep Prussian blue hues and its almost alchemical use of sunlight (or UV light) to develop an image. In this workshop, you'll make your own one-of-a-kind holiday cards and prints. Vanessa will bring card and envelope sets ready for you to print on, along with a selection of festive films you can use alongside found objects to build your compositions. You'll coat your cards with light-sensitive chemistry, arrange your designs, and expose them to create sun prints in that signature cyanotype blue. Vanessa will guide you through each step, from coating to exposure to rinsing, sharing tips along the way for getting the richest results. No photography or art experience necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to get a little blue-fingered. What you'll take away: A hands-on introduction to the cyanotype process, from coating to exposure to rinsing Several finished cyanotype prints & cards across a mix of formats to keep, gift, or frame A new appreciation for one of photography's oldest techniques Materials & refreshments: All cyanotype materials and preparation provided. Light refreshments are included.
