The Climber's Edge Board is Metolius's redesign of the Wood Grips II, the hangboard that lived above thousands of doorways for a decade. Same FSC-certified wood, same skin-friendly finish, now with a cleaner layout built around six graduated edges from 7.5 mm to 20 mm, two slopers, and a pair of jugs, in a 23.6" x 6.3" footprint that fits over a standard door frame. It is the successor to the Wood Grips II Deluxe and Compact, which we still carry while the final run lasts. Mounting hardware, instructions, and a training guide are in the box. Made by Metolius in Bend, Oregon. What's on the Board Six edges: 7.5 mm, 10 mm, 12.5 mm, 15 mm, 17.5 mm, and 20 mm 40 mm radius round sloper 20 degree flat sloper Jugs for warm-ups, pull-ups, and rest positions The graduated edge series is the point of the design. Instead of a scattering of pockets, you get a clean progression in 2.5 mm steps, so moving from the 20 mm edge to the 17.5 mm is a measurable, repeatable jump. That makes it as useful for tracking finger strength over months as it is for a quick session before work. Who It's For Climbers from first-year to solid intermediate will use every hold on it; the 7.5 mm edge will keep advanced climbers honest for a long time. It's also the hangboard we point lifters and grip athletes to: edge hangs build the open-hand and half-crimp strength that carries to thick-bar pulls, pinch, and awkward-object lifts, and a wood board is far kinder to skin than a resin one when you're also training grippers and handles. How to Use Mount the board to wall studs above a doorway or on a dedicated wall using the included hardware and instructions. Door frames and drywall anchors are not safe mounts. Warm up on the jugs: a few sets of easy hangs and pull-ups. Start on the 20 mm edge with both hands, feet on a chair or box if you need to take weight off. Hang for 7 to 10 seconds, rest for 2 to 3 minutes, and repeat 4 to 6 times. Move to a smaller edge only when the current one feels controlled for every rep. Add load with a weight belt before going to an edge you can't hold cleanly. Two sessions a week is plenty. Finger tendons adapt slower than muscle; rushing is how people get hurt. Metolius's own training guide ships with the board and covers progressions in detail. Pair your hangboard work with extensor training to keep your elbows healthy, and use chalk on the slopers. What's Included One Metolius Climber's Edge Board Mounting hardware Mounting instructions and training guide Size: 23.6" x 6.3" (600 mm x 160 mm); natural wood finish; FSC certified FAQ How does this compare to the Wood Grips II Deluxe and Compact? It is their successor, and both are still available here while the final run lasts. The Deluxe is wider (24" x 8.5") with 15 mixed pockets; the Compact is the smaller version. The Climber's Edge Board is between them in size and trades the pocket variety for a graduated edge series, which is better for structured training and progress tracking. If you like the Wood Grips for their wood feel and over-door fit, this is the direct successor. Can I mount it on a door frame like a pull-up bar? No. It needs to be screwed into wall studs, above the doorway or on a dedicated wall, using the included hardware. A door-frame mount or drywall anchors cannot be trusted with body weight on small edges. Is wood better than resin for a hangboard? For most people, yes. Wood is easier on skin, which matters when you train several times a week, and the smooth finish rewards good technique rather than friction. Resin boards offer more texture and hold variety, which some advanced climbers prefer. If you also train grippers, handles, or thick bars, wood is the better choice for your hands. Will I outgrow it? Not quickly. A 7.5 mm edge is a serious hold for anyone, and adding weight to any edge extends the board indefinitely. Most climbers spend years on a board like this before needing anything else. Can it be mounted outside? Under cover, yes, with the understanding that wood weathers. Direct sun and rain will shorten its life and roughen the finish. Indoors above a door is where it's designed to live.
