The men's seersucker shirt, milk and sugar The word seersucker comes from Persian shir o shakar, "milk and sugar": the sugar for the grainy relief, the milk for the smooth bands. This light cotton was born in India, from where it was exported to Europe in the 17th century, and has served since to dress the great heat; from the Victorian era to the early 20th century, it was also used for bedding and summer nightshirts. In the United States, it is best known in blue and white stripes. This men's seersucker shirt keeps the tradition: fine sky-blue and white stripes, and the pucker that makes the whole cloth. Material: 100% cotton seersucker, 135 g/m², permanent pucker from the weave Stripes: sky and white, about 2 mm Collar: button-down, 6.5 cm points, 4 cm collar stand Buttons: genuine mother-of-pearl Origin: pre-washed, made in Morocco A pucker that comes from the weave The relief is not a finish. In weaving, some warp threads are held taut while others stay slack: the slack bands pucker, the taut bands stay flat. The pucker is therefore permanent, and it holds the cloth slightly away from the skin when it is hot. The cotton, at 135 g/m², is pre-washed to stabilise the cloth. The stripes measure about 2 mm, in a pale, desaturated sky; the texture is what you read most. Here, the iron has nothing to correct. A button-down collar and mother-of-pearl buttons The button-down collar has 6.5 cm points, buttoned at the front, and a 4 cm collar stand at the back for a clean line. The buttons are genuine mother-of-pearl, the iridescent lining of some shells, which takes the light differently from resin. A 10.5 × 12.5 cm patch chest pocket, with no flap, completes the shirt. The topstitching is done at 5 stitches per centimetre. The shirt is made in Morocco. Cut and sizing A cut with measured ease, hip length, worn untucked or tucked in. From S to 2XL. Take your usual size; for a closer fit, go down a size. To measure your half chest, run a tape measure under the armpits, around the chest, and divide by two; the size guide helps you compare. How to wear a men's seersucker shirt Over a beige chino or a navy chino, untucked, sleeves rolled up. With military bermuda shorts in high summer, for a light outfit without looking sloppy. Under a light work jacket, button-down collar closed, when the evening cools. Open over a white T-shirt, it becomes a summer overshirt. Care Machine washable at home: 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately the first few times, because dyed cotton bleeds slightly.
