Dolomite Mountain Lion by Melvin Sandoval

A peach veined and prominent iron red colored Mexican quarried dolomite mountain lion created by the abstract carver Melvin Sandoval. The tail is carved in the traditional Zuni style wrapping back on top of the lion's body. There is a simple offering bundle wrapped around the lion's body featuring a coral and two clam shell heishi beads surrounding three turquoise beads. Note that Melvin has left some porous areas near the back left hind leg and the left side of the tail. For the Zuni, the lion represents the guardian of the north - he is the master hunter, revered for intelligence, prowess and strength of will. The mountain lion enjoys the prestige of being one of the most capable predators, and therefore conveys to man a spirit to refine goals, preserve, and achieve.
