True vacuum de-airing at −0.09MPa: What comes out goes straight on the wheel. Free UK pallet delivery. Price inc VAT. The Job Nobody Wants To Do Every studio has the bucket. Trimmings, throwing slop, the failed pots — it all goes in, and then somebody has to deal with it. Slake it down, spread it on plaster or a board, wait, turn it, wait again, then wedge the whole lot back into something you'd actually throw on. For a busy studio that's three to five hours of someone's week, every week. At technician rates that's £2,000–£3,500 a year, and if you're the owner it's your evenings instead. Most studios keep doing it by hand for one simple reason: a de-airing pugmill in the UK starts at £6,174, and that's the bare machine on its own. It's a genuinely hard purchase to justify — so the bucket stays, and so do the hours. That's the gap we built this for. It's a proper vacuum de-airing machine, so what comes out of the nozzle is throwing-ready — no wedging afterwards, no air to worry about. And rather than selling you a bare unit, the stainless extrusion table comes with it as standard, so you have somewhere to pug onto from day one. If the wet end needs sorting too, the complete reclaim kit adds the plaster and mould for casting your own drying blocks, a proper paddle mixer for blunging slop, the bucket to collect it in and the scrapers to lift it all off. That's what separates a de-airing machine from a plain pugmill: plain pugmills mix, but you still have to wedge afterwards to get the air out. This doesn't. The 60mm pug that comes out is dense and consistent, and it goes straight onto the wheelhead. 304 stainless where it counts Every part that touches the clay — barrel, auger and outlet — is 304 stainless steel, the grade specified for food-production equipment. Nothing else comes into contact with your clay, which matters most if you throw porcelain or anything pale enough to show a speck of iron. The outer casing is 201 stainless, a structural panel that never sees clay. We'd rather give you the grades than say "stainless" and let you guess. Safety built in, not bolted on There's a safety limit switch on the inlet: the auger will not turn while the inlet is open, so there's no route for fingers to reach a moving part. There's also a proper red emergency stop on the front panel that halts everything in one hit. Both are fitted as standard — no safety option to tick, no extra line on the invoice. If you run open studio sessions, teach classes, or have anyone but yourself near the machine, this is the specification that matters most. Plaster blocks, done properly The optional reclaim kit includes 25kg of Formula pottery plaster and a tray mould, so you can cast real drying blocks sized to your own bench. If you're currently spreading slop on cement boards or stone bath mats — and plenty of studios are — proper plaster pulls water out far faster and far more evenly, with nothing leaching into the clay. Cast a couple, and the drying stage stops being the bottleneck. The six-piece scraper set in the kit is for lifting the stiffened clay back off cleanly. Three-year warranty We specified this machine ourselves and we cover it for three years on parts and labour. If you're weighing an unfamiliar name against a brand you already know, the warranty is the honest answer to that question — we're carrying the risk, not you. And you're dealing with us directly rather than through a distributor, so if something needs sorting there's one phone call, not three. Upkeep is straightforward: check the vacuum pump oil on the sight gauge before use, keep clay clear of the inlet and outlet, and run it briefly once a month if it's been sitting. That's it. Why We Built It We started Kiln Crafts in our living room, and we still only put our name on things we'd be happy to use ourselves. We kept hearing the same thing from studios: the reclaim is the worst job in the building, the machine that fixes it costs more than a kiln, and nobody sells the rest of the kit you actually need alongside it. So we specified this one ourselves and brought in a small first batch of nine — deliberately small, because we'd rather get it right with nine studios than ship a hundred and find out afterwards. Everyone in this first batch gets our direct line, and we genuinely want to hear how it performs. It's a new machine from us, and we'd rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. It's designed in the UK by us and manufactured to our specification in China, it ships with a UK plug fitted and a full user manual, and we'll stand behind it for three years.
