Antique, 19th century, Ottoman Empire rose-cut diamond solitaire ring

Provenance Original to c.1890, this is one of the most special solitaire rings in our collection. Set to centre with an incredible rose-cut diamond in a cut-down closed-back setting. The rose-cut is one of the earliest diamond cuts, originating in the 17th century. Characterised by an arrangement of triangular facets inspired by the petals of a rosebud, rose-cut diamonds are prized for their soft and romantic glow as opposed to the much harsher scintillation of modern laser cut stones. The diamond is surrounded by open-work claws which elegantly curve, to an illusion-style surround crafted in hand carved gold work featuring scrolling motifs and volutes. The shoulders are very lightly open and feature chenier motifs. Tapering to a ridge and flowing to a solid gold shank. Due to the closed-back setting we would not recommend wearing this ring as an engagement ring due to the risk of getting water trapped behind the diamond.
