This charming vintage Halcyon Days Bilston & Battersea Enamels miniature trinket box is a beautiful example of English enamelware, featuring a delightful ginger cat and kitten design and its original royal blue Halcyon Days presentation box. The finely decorated lid depicts a ginger cat sitting beside a playful kitten, surrounded by green grass against a crisp white enamel background. Delicate gold-coloured rims finish the lid and base, while the base itself is a warm terracotta colour. Made in England, this little enamel box dates from the early revival period of Halcyon Days and Bilston & Battersea Enamels, when the traditional English craft of enamelling on copper was being reintroduced. The enamel is beautifully preserved with no chips or damage. Presentation box: very good vintage condition, with slight wear to the corners and inner hinge. Please see photographs for further detail. A Little History Halcyon Days was founded by Susan Benjamin in 1950 as a Mayfair emporium specialising in antiques and small enamel boxes. In 1970, Benjamin collaborated with the Marshall family and an enamel manufacturer in Bilston to revive the traditional English art of enamelling on copper. The resulting Bilston & Battersea Enamels range became an important part of Halcyon Days’ history, combining traditional enamelling techniques with finely painted decorative designs. Halcyon Days also developed a long-standing association with the British Royal Family. In 1970, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother commissioned a Halcyon Days enamel box depicting Clarence House. The company was granted its first Royal Warrant by The Queen Mother in 1972, followed by a Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II in 1978. The two Royal appointment crests inside this original presentation box therefore provide an interesting piece of context and provenance, placing the box within this important period in the company’s history. A delightful example of vintage English enamel craftsmanship, with the added appeal of its original presentation box and Royal connections.
