Cole's Story Cole is our miracle baby born at 24 weeks weighing 1 pound 10 oz. He suffered a Grade 4 bilateral brain bleed on day 4 of his life, which is the highest level grade, causing permanent brain damage. His brain bleed caused Cerebral Palsy which is a disconnection between the brain and muscles. CP is a life long disability that is incurable but has many treatments that can improve functionality and lifestyle. Cole spent 144 days in the NICU, hospital bills were totaling $1 million dollars per month spent there (before insurance). This bill alone will be something that we will be paying off for the rest of our lives. Cole is now 3 years old and followed by many specialists including: Neurology, Neurosurgery, ENT, Opthomology, CP Rehab Doctors, nutritionist, an aerodigestive team, and primary care doctors. We are proud to say he has graduated from Pulmonology, Cardiology and Urology. Though we have come to terms that hospital bills will be a forever lingering thing for us, what we did not expect was the out of pocket services available to help Cole. Cole has been in Physical therapy, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy and Feeding therapy his entire life and will continue for the rest of it. Now that he is 3 years old and we have somewhat better of an idea of what he can do, where his restrictions and limitations are and how well he responds to these therapies. It is so hard to not be able to get him into them for financial reasons. Cole responds so well to "Intensive" type therapies, which are 100% out of pocket. Now that Cole is 3 years old, he has aged out of the Regional Center where he was receiving free in home services and we are now responsible for paying for these services out of pocket since the state options are extremely under staffed and inexperienced.
