A Shiro Tamba Chawan by Kimihiko Imanishi, a ceramic artist based in Tamba. Though white forms the foundation of the piece, flashes of fire color, scorching, ash, and exposed clay overlap across the surface, creating a richly varied landscape. The white glaze does not cover the bowl uniformly; instead, it flows, breaks, peels back, and remains partially unmelted, allowing the character of the clay beneath to emerge. Each side reveals a completely different expression. Across the powerful cylindrical form, white, amber, gray, and reddish-brown tones intersect, while the interior develops dense pools of glaze and scorched areas from the firing. Even around the foot, the effects of the kiln remain clearly visible, bringing together a sense of rawness and brilliance within the same bowl. Although it is a Shiro Tamba Chawan, the work is far from restrained. The movement of clay and the force of the wood-fired kiln are expressed across the entire surface, giving the bowl an exceptionally rich and dynamic character.
