Green Lacquer Kang Table with Carved Spandrels

Shanxi, circa 1920 This charming low table has been refinished in a muted grey-green lacquer, distressed to complement the grain and texture of the old wood. Darker markings show through across the surface, with warm timber exposed along the edges. The restrained colour highlights the table’s traditional form, with a broad, overhanging top and decorative carved spandrels tapering down beside the short legs. Originally used as a kang table, it would have stood on the raised, heated platform found in northern Chinese homes, providing a convenient surface for tea and informal meals. Two drawers, each fitted with a simple metal drop handle, sit above a recessed front panel, while panelled sides and shaped lower rails complete the balanced design. Today, its compact size and low proportions make it a lovely coffee table for a smaller living room. The drawers offer useful storage for remote controls and other small items, while the soft grey-green finish would sit beautifully alongside neutral fabrics and natural wood.
