This particular instrument, serial number 034036, was acquired by KGUmusic specifically for a custom project. The trumpet was already in very good technical and playing condition and did not require structural repair. Our goal was therefore not to rebuild the instrument, but to preserve its original Yamaha character while upgrading selected components and creating a unique finish. Classic Yamaha Construction The original Yamaha YTR-634 was designed as a professional Bb trumpet with an ML (Medium-Large) bore. Its construction combines several materials, including a yellow brass body and tubing with nickel-silver components, while the gold brass (red brass) bell and leadpipe give the instrument a warmer and more colorful tonal character. This combination of materials is one of the most interesting characteristics of the YTR-634. The traditional brass construction provides clarity, response, and focus, while the higher-copper-content bell and leadpipe contribute additional warmth, depth, and tonal complexity. KGUmusic Customization For this project, the original lacquer was carefully removed while preserving the geometry and original construction of the instrument. The trumpet was then upgraded with KGUmusic heavy finger rings, adding both visual character and additional mass to selected areas of the instrument. The original water keys were replaced with modern Saturn water keys, and a KGUmusic Heavy Trim Kit was installed to complement the new configuration. After preparation, the entire instrument received a deep dark brown patina, followed by a durable high-gloss protective lacquer. The result is a rich, dimensional finish that highlights the different metals used throughout the trumpet while giving this vintage Yamaha a completely individual appearance. Vintage Yamaha Sound with a New Character The YTR-634 is particularly interesting because of the combination of its ML bore, gold brass bell, gold brass leadpipe, yellow brass construction, and nickel-silver components. The result is a trumpet that retains the responsive and focused character associated with classic professional Yamaha instruments while offering a warm, rich tonal palette. The custom heavy components add another dimension to the instrument, making this YTR-634 not simply a restored vintage trumpet, but a unique KGUmusic interpretation of a classic Yamaha design.
