Spatial perfectly encapsulates Francis Dusépulchre's exploration of perception through colour, geometry and optical relationships. The artist constructs an image that appears simultaneously flat and spatial, inviting viewers to experience subtle shifts in depth and movement. Using industrial lacquer on masonite, Dusépulchre achieves an exceptionally smooth surface that enhances the painting's optical precision. Every colour transition has been carefully calculated, allowing the work to generate a remarkable sense of visual vibration. Dusépulchre (1934–2013) trained as an art teacher before turning, self-taught, to painting and sculpture. From 1979 he began stretching wires across his panels, and by 1983 was embedding optical fibres to generate points of light — a body of work centred on how structure, incision and light interact across a surface.
