Andropogon gerardii - Big bluestem

Morphology/Growth habits: This tall, warm-season grass starts silvery blue-green in the summer, then in the fall the colors transform to beautiful shades of red, orange, and purple and its long seedheads dance in the wind. Clump-forming and slow to establish, but once it does it typically spreads by short rhizomes and self-seeds in optimal conditions. Height: 4-6 ft Light: Full sun Moisture: Medium-Dry Bloom color: Purplish-red Bloom time: September to February Habitat/Best Environments: This species was once dominant in tallgrass prairies, and is now used for prairie restoration as well. Grows best in moist, fertile soil, making it great for rain gardens. Tolerant of many moisture/light conditions (salt, clay, and poor soil). Deep roots make it drought-tolerant and good for erosion control. Ecological relationships: Known for its importance in prairie ecosystems, this tall grass is a host plant for numerous butterfly species (Dusted Skipper, Common-Wood Nymph, etc.) and provides habitat for many birds, mammals, and insects!
