The High-Fin Banded Shark is one of those fish that immediately stands out. Juveniles have bold black-and-white bands and an oversized dorsal fin that gives them a really unique look. As they grow, their body shape and coloration change quite a bit, making them an interesting fish to raise over time. Despite the name, they aren’t actually sharks. They’re peaceful, bottom-oriented fish that spend much of their time cruising around rocks and substrate looking for food. They do get very large, so this is definitely a fish to plan ahead for. They are a cooler-water species and should not be treated like a typical tropical community fish. Juveniles can be kept in large aquariums, but these fish grow substantially and will eventually need an extremely large setup or pond. Rocks, smooth substrate, and good water movement help create an environment where they can graze and explore naturally. Feed a quality sinking pellet or wafer along with algae-based foods, vegetables, and occasional frozen foods. They naturally spend a lot of time grazing along the bottom.
