"Cranes in the Clouds" Vintage Juban Underkimono
This listing is for a traditional underkimono (juban in Japanese) designed to be worn beneath a woman's kimono. A striking scarlet red juban pairs airy shibori clouds with graceful cranes rendered in intricate kanoko (fawn spot) shibori, their outstretched wings giving the design a wonderful sense of movement. Delicate gold flecks shimmer across the pale clouds alongside small bamboo motifs, bringing together symbols of longevity, resilience, good fortune, and enduring happiness. There are signs of age, with a few light blemishes, see last photo. Underkimono make wonderful robes because they are cut shorter than outer kimono, so they do not have the extra length that is typically folded at the waist for traditional dressing. The lighter weight and streamlined shape make them easy to slip on and wear without added bulk. Perfect for the beach, poolside lounging, summer cover ups, or effortless layering at home or out and about. The belt is not included, but if you'd like to wear or display this kimono with a traditional obi, browse our selection of OBI BELTS. Although it isn't traditional, if you'd like one of our simple cotton sashes to wear with this, we'll choose a complimenting color (see Add a Sash? above). See the videos below to learn how to dress in kimono.
