Instead of a brush and thin colour, you work thick paste with a palette knife, pushing it into ridges and peaks that catch the light and throw their own shadows. The canvas stops being a flat picture and starts being an object. Summertime Australia is the one you are building this afternoon. Turquoise water breaking into thick cream whitewater, dragged out across warm sand with a beach umbrella dropped in for good measure, the sort of coastline you can see from the Esplanade five minutes from your seat. Flat Versus Raised Why It Looks Better In Real Life Than In A Photo A flat surface has nothing for light to catch. A raised one picks up a highlight on every peak and drops a shadow behind it, so the painting changes as you walk past it and changes again when the sun moves. That is the whole trick, and it is why a wobbly knife edge is a feature rather than a mistake. The bar and bistro are open, so come in for lunch first and be seated before we start. → Wear clothes you do not mind painting in. Texture paste is thicker than paint and considerably more enthusiastic about your sleeves. → Short nails help. So does leaving the good rings at home. You will be working the paste with a knife and occasionally a fingertip. → Bring something flat to carry the canvas home in the car. Raised paint stays soft for a while and does not like anything resting against it. → Tickets are online only. They are not sold at the door. Your host demonstrates the knife work up close so you can see what thick paint actually does before you touch it. 2 The base goes down first, colour laid flat across the canvas, guided the whole way. 3 Break for a drink and something to eat while that base sets. The pauses are deliberate, thick paint needs them. 4 Then the paste. Wave, whitewater and sand built up with the knife, and photos at an angle so the texture actually shows. Do I finish it on the day? You do. The artwork is designed for the time we have, and the drying pauses are built into the afternoon rather than bolted on the end. Do I need painting experience? None at all, and textured art is friendlier to beginners than it looks. A knife edge is meant to be irregular, so the wobble that would show in a fine brush line just reads as texture here. How do I get a wet canvas home? Carry it flat, and give it a few days before you hang it. Bring something flat for the boot and you will be fine. Can I change the colours? Within reason, yes. The artwork comes from our catalogue and we are happy to tweak colours to suit you at no extra charge. We do not paint a different subject from scratch.
