19th Century, in the 17th Century Taste Casket Tortoiseshell with engraved mother-of-pearl inlay, the hinged lid opening to reveal an interior entirely veneered in various woods on a black ground, decorated with scrolls, flowers and a bird. The lid is adorned with an allegorical composition framed by rich foliate arabesques; the sides feature a continuous decoration of flowers and foliage.
