See more work available by Alexander James Gordon About Alexander James Gordon Alexander James Gordon is an artist living and working in North London. His paintings are abstract landscapes using oils and a palette knife on canvas. Alexander was an art teacher for 20 years before a move to concentrate more on his own practice in 2018, he still works in education within a Performing Arts School. Alexander creates his artwork, to explore, never seeking perfection he encourages the mistake and takes joy in the smallest marks made. With this attitude he allows his work to take form as he paints. Alexander starts with a colour palette inspired by a moment that has captured his thoughts, whether that was a place in time, a feeling or a colour of a walking trail. Allowing himself freedom of expression without a fixed outcome in mind always presents the challenge of knowing when the piece is finished, but also leaves a strong desire to paint again. Alexander is inspired by the colour and light found in everyday travels. His main influence comes from watching the sky and imagining the possibility of colour to be used within his artwork. The focus of each piece is from a memory of either a moment he has experienced or a view that caught his imagination. He will reflect on the feelings of that vision to generate his colour palette. From this starting point he encourages the painting to take its own course and finds great enjoyment in allowing the work to take unexpected turns as the work develops. Alexander is the viewer at the gallery with his nose pressed up against the painting to be drawn in by each and every mark the artist has created.
