Late Geometric Period, c. 750–700 BC, Greece (Macedonia) An exceptional ancient Greek bronze pendant cast in the form of a dove, beautifully rendered with a pointed beak, elongated flat tail, rounded body, and finely incised striations defining the wings on either side. A small suspension loop is positioned at the centre of the back, allowing the bird to have been worn as an individual pendant or incorporated into a larger necklace or item of personal adornment. The dove held important symbolic associations in the ancient Mediterranean, particularly with femininity, motherhood, fertility, and love. In Greek mythology, the bird was closely associated with Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, and was later similarly connected with the Roman goddess Venus. Its gentle nature and graceful appearance made it a natural symbol of feminine qualities and divine affection. Doves and pigeons also played a practical role in the ancient Greek world. Carrier pigeons were used to transmit messages over considerable distances, including the communication of military victories and important news from the battlefield. They were famously employed in connection with the Olympic Games, where pigeons could be released to carry the results of competitions back to distant communities. Elegant in form yet rich in symbolic associations, this bronze dove pendant is a fine example of Late Geometric Greek metalwork. Its carefully stylised form and suspension loop offer a tangible glimpse into the personal adornment, artistic traditions, and symbolic world of Archaic Greece. Excellent condition. Intact. Light surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use, with lovely deep green and brown patina. Light encrustations within recessed areas. Size approx. 5,1cm x 2,2cm x 1,0cm. Provenance: Dutch private collection. Acquired in the 1960s.
