Chinoiserie Transferware Plates

A set of seven blue and white transferware plates, each printed with a dense chinoiserie pattern - a central basket of peony, chrysanthemum, and trailing blossom, framed by a wide border of fruiting vine and floral sprays. The rim takes a slight scallop, softening the otherwise formal symmetry of the design. Unmarked, as is common for transferware of this kind, where the pattern was prized above the maker. The density and registration of the print, together with the weight and glaze of the body, point to a piece from the height of the chinoiserie revival. 24cm in diameter - a versatile size that sits well as a dinner or lunch plate, and layers easily over a plain charger or atop a white cloth, where the pattern can do the talking.
