"Love and live happy..." a 22 carat gold message for you from the 1600s. And what more could we ask for than to love and live happy? A rare 17th century posy ring in high carat gold inscribed inside with the romantic motto - Love & Live Happy - in an italicised script. "[Charles] Oman (1974: 40-1) states that Roman capitals were used for inscriptions from the mid-16th century, and were replaced by Italics by the second quarter of the 17th century."* A ring with the same inscription dated to 1689 is mentioned in Joan Evans's English Posies and Posy Rings (1931), and there are two others in the British Museum collections (Af. 1331 & 1330). A pure talisman of human intention, of love and loyalty, a magical object with a tangible and emotional connection to a distant past. A maker's mark, RE or RL, is present inside the band. *Source: British Museum Era: Stuart, circa 1650-1700 Ring size: R 1/2 or 9 US.
