Levocetirizine is a type of medicine called an antihistamine. It is the active part (the R-enantiomer) of another antihistamine called cetirizine. It works by blocking the effect of a natural chemical in the body called histamine. Histamine is released when you come into contact with something you are allergic to, such as pollen, house dust mites, mould or animal fur, and it causes allergy symptoms. Levocetirizine is one of the newer, less-sedating antihistamines. Even so, it can still make some people feel sleepy. What it is used for Levocetirizine 5mg tablets are used in adults and children aged 6 years and over for the symptoms of: Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever and year-round nasal allergies) — sneezing, a blocked, runny or itchy nose, and itchy, watery eyes. Urticaria (hives / nettle rash) — an itchy, raised rash. How the online consultation works Levocetirizine is prescription-only, so you cannot simply add it to a basket. Instead: You complete a short, free online consultation about your symptoms and health. One of our pharmacist prescribers reviews your answers to check it is safe and suitable for you. If it is appropriate, a prescription is issued and your medicine is dispensed and delivered. If it is not suitable, our pharmacist will explain why and suggest other options. Our pharmacists are here to help if you are unsure whether this is the right treatment for you. How to take it Follow the instructions from your prescriber and the patient information leaflet. The usual dose for adults and children aged 6 years and over is one 5mg tablet once a day. Swallow the tablet whole with a drink of water, with or without food. If you have kidney problems, your prescriber may advise a lower dose or a longer gap between doses. Do not take more than the recommended dose.
