Aged Puer & Chen Pi Cha Gao, 1g Instant Tea Resin Here at Great Tea, we have a fabulous selection of Cha Gao, and this Aged-Puer and Chen Pi Cha Gao is one of our favourites, and it's taken us a while to get it in stock, but now we have it! Cha Gao, often translated as tea resin or tea paste, is one of the more unusual forms of tea. Instead of loose leaves, it comes as a small concentrated piece of tea extract that dissolves instantly in hot water. This version combines aged Puer tea with Chen Pi (aged tangerine peel), creating a rich, warming infusion with deep earthy notes and a gentle citrus brightness. Each 1g piece is designed for a single cup, making it an easy and convenient way to enjoy the character of Puer without traditional brewing. What Is Cha Gao? Cha Gao has a surprisingly long history in China. Records suggest that concentrated tea pastes were already being produced during the Tang and Song dynasties, when tea was sometimes boiled or whisked in powdered form. During the Qing Dynasty, refined tea pastes became particularly valued in the imperial court. Specialised methods were used to slowly extract the essence of tea leaves and concentrate it into a dense resin. This process preserved the flavour while creating a tea that could be prepared quickly. Modern Cha Gao follows a similar idea, using gentle extraction techniques to concentrate tea into small pieces that dissolve in water. For more information about Chao Gao and its history, see our article: Cha Gao Tea: The Ancient Puer Essence for Modern Life. Puer and Chen Pi This Cha Gao blends two traditional ingredients often enjoyed together: Aged Puer – a post-fermented tea from Yunnan known for its deep, earthy character and smooth texture. Chen Pi – dried and aged tangerine peel, traditionally used in Chinese tea and cuisine for its warm citrus aroma. When combined, the two create a balanced cup where the richness of Puer is lifted by the bright fragrance of aged citrus. Flavour & Aroma The infusion is smooth, aromatic, and comforting. Expect notes of: Dark earth and wood Cocoa or malt Warm orange peel Gentle sweetness The liquor brews deep amber to reddish-brown, with a rounded body and soft citrus finish. How to Prepare Cha Gao is extremely simple to use. Place 1 piece (1g) in a cup Add 250–300ml hot water (90–100°C) Stir gently if needed until dissolved The strength can easily be adjusted by adding more or less water. Experience will guide you! Why We Love It Cha Gao offers a different way to enjoy tea. There’s no teapot, no measuring, and no leaves to discard, just a small piece that transforms into a full cup of tea in seconds. The combination of aged Puer and Chen Pi makes this version especially comforting, with a balance of depth and citrus brightness. It’s a simple, convenient format, but still rooted in a long tradition of Chinese tea culture.
